More restricted in distribution than Sympetrum striolatum it extended its range in the 1980s and 1990s, particularly in the north of the county. At favoured sites it is very abundant but was affected by the droughts of the 1990s. At Ufton Fields, a stronghold, many of its ponds dried out completely in the summer of 1996, but the populations there and elsewhere in the county recovered well.
